One person has died and four suspects have been arrested following a clash between farmers and herders in Guda Village, Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The deceased, identified as 40-year-old Usman Jibrin, reportedly died while receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the violence.
Bauchi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, explaining that the incident occurred on September 23, 2026.
According to the police, three farmers discovered cattle belonging to a herder grazing on and destroying their crops at Guda Hill. When they drove the cattle towards the herders’ settlement, an argument broke out and escalated into a fight, leaving the farmers injured.
The police said some youths from the village subsequently mobilised in retaliation and set houses in the herders’ settlement on fire.
Operatives from the Ningi Police Division responded to the incident, restored order and evacuated the injured to General Hospital, Ningi, for treatment. One of the injured farmers later died.
Habib said four suspects were arrested on October 8 following intelligence-led operations. They are being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, arson and culpable homicide.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation.
Aliyu also commiserated with the bereaved family and residents who lost property, assuring the public that those responsible would face justice.
The commissioner urged communities across the state to resolve disputes peacefully and promote dialogue between farmers and herders to prevent further violence.
