The Oyo State House of Assembly has accepted the apology of Hon. Ibrahim Shittu over a defamatory statement and video that violated the ethics and standing rules of the House.
The apology, earlier submitted to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, was read on the floor of the Assembly on Thursday by the Clerk of the House, Barrister Muraina Taiwo-Akinola, during plenary.
In the written apology, Hon. Shittu expressed regret over his actions, admitting that the statement and video fell short of the ethical standards expected of a lawmaker. He acknowledged that the conduct breached House rules and had the potential to bring the legislature into disrepute.
Ruling on the matter, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, accepted the apology, describing the admission of error and expression of remorse as crucial steps toward preserving the dignity and sanctity of the Assembly.
The Speaker urged members to conduct themselves responsibly and to exercise caution in their actions and utterances, both within and outside the legislative chambers. He stressed that lawmakers’ public conduct reflects on the image and credibility of the Oyo State House of Assembly, calling on all members to uphold high standards of discipline, decorum, and accountability.
In separate remarks, the Minority Leader, Hon. Waliu Ayinde, and the Chief Whip and Chairman of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, commended the Speaker for handling the matter with maturity, wisdom, and statesmanship. They described his intervention as balanced, firm, and reflective of the dignity of the House.
