FRSC Attributes Anthony Joshua Crash to Speeding, Wrongful Overtaking

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that the road crash involving former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.

Joshua was involved in the accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, Ogun State. Two of his associates from the United Kingdom reportedly lost their lives in the incident.

In a statement signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC confirmed that the crash occurred around 12:00 p.m. on December 29, 2025, near the Sinoma area of Sagamu.

According to the statement, the crash involved a black Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua and a stationary red Sinotruck parked by the roadside. Five adult males were involved in the accident. Two persons died, one sustained injuries, while two others, including Joshua, escaped with minor injuries.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, suspected to be travelling beyond the prescribed speed limit, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and collided with a stationary truck,” Ogungbemide said.

He added that FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes of receiving the report, enabling prompt rescue operations, evacuation of victims, traffic control and prevention of secondary crashes.

The injured victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has been notified for further investigation.

Videos circulating on social media showed Joshua appearing dazed and in visible pain as he was assisted out of the wrecked vehicle by bystanders. He was reportedly seated at the rear of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery.

The FRSC reiterated its warning to motorists against excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking and disregard for traffic regulations, particularly on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Motorists were also urged to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline and prioritise safety, especially during the festive travel season.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to road safety, rapid emergency response and sustained public enlightenment to reduce traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.
