A 22-year-old British national has been arrested on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in connection with an incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, UK.

Counter Terrorism Policing said the man was arrested in Westminster, London, on Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into events near the airbase on September 27.

The arrest brings the number of people detained in connection with the incident to seven. No one has been charged.

Police declared a major incident after being alerted to three “suspicious vehicles” near the airbase, prompting the evacuation of dozens of homes in the surrounding area.

Vicki Evans, Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said the investigation remained active, with officers pursuing several lines of inquiry.

Five men aged between 23 and 25 were arrested near the base on September 27. They were initially detained on suspicion of explosives offences and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.

The men were subsequently released on police bail as part of what police described as an investigative decision based on operational experience and strategy.

A sixth suspect, a 25-year-old dual Iranian-British national, was arrested in Westminster on October 1 and later released on bail.

RAF Fairford, near Whelford, has been used by the US Air Force for decades and has recently played a role in US military operations involving the Middle East.

US B-1 and B-52 bombers had been operating from the base after the UK approved a request for Fairford to support defensive strikes against Iran.

The US later withdrew the bombers from the base and returned them to the United States.

President Donald Trump said the aircraft had been removed because of “some threats” to the base but did not provide further details.

US media reports subsequently suggested that intelligence had indicated Iran was planning a drone attack against the base. Those reports have not been independently verified by the BBC.
