Lagos, Nigeria \u2013 August 14, 2025<\/em> \u2014 The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Widescope Group, Dr. Segun Musa, has commended the Federal Government for introducing a 10-year strategic policy to revamp Nigeria\u2019s transport sector, describing the initiative as a key driver for economic growth and national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during a recent media engagement, Dr. Musa emphasized that transportation is the backbone of any thriving economy, noting that getting the transport system right is fundamental to unlocking Nigeria\u2019s full economic potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTransportation is the motive force behind the economy of any country. If you can get the transport system right, you can get the economy right. It is the starting point for development. Without transport, we cannot transfer what we call development from one region to another,\u201d Musa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed the need for all modes of transport \u2014 including roads, waterways, pipelines, and rail \u2014 to be developed and to complement one another for maximum efficiency. According to him, failure to integrate these modes could result in operational gaps and inefficiencies, which he referred to as \u201copen scout.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musa urged the government to prioritize the road network, not only focusing on land transportation but also extending attention to inland waterways and other forms of transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we talk about roads, we are not just referring to land roads. We are talking about waterways, pipeline corridors, and fiscal transport infrastructure. All transport networks must work in synergy. This enhances performance,\u201d he stated. \u201cBasic infrastructure must be in place, and so must regular maintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, Dr. Musa called for urgent attention to Nigeria\u2019s waterways, stressing the importance of maintenance, safety, and security. He warned that poor maintenance has led to increasing accidents on waterways, posing risks to users and threatening the sector\u2019s viability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf there is no proper maintenance of the waterways, we will continue to witness accidents. Rescue teams must be available, and safety and security measures must be implemented. These are the elements that give people confidence to use the waterways,\u201d he advised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Musa concluded by urging all arms of government to work collaboratively in supporting the implementation of the new transport policy, noting that a well-functioning transport system is essential for national integration, trade, and overall economic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
