President Tinubu Reshuffles Cabinet, Fires Five Ministers Amid Economic Struggles

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has fired five ministers and appointed seven new ones in a significant cabinet reshuffle, aimed at improving the efficiency of his administration, his office announced on Wednesday. The move comes as Nigeria faces worsening economic hardship, inflation, and frustration from citizens.

The reshuffle includes the appointment of new ministers for humanitarian and poverty reduction, trade and investment, labor, and livestock development, along with junior ministers for foreign affairs, education, and housing. Meanwhile, the ministers for education, tourism, women’s affairs, and youth development, as well as the junior minister for housing, were dismissed.

Tinubu, who took office last year, implemented reforms aimed at reducing government spending and boosting foreign investments. However, more than a year later, inflation has soared to a 28-year high, and the naira currency has hit record lows against the dollar.

Growing public frustration over the economic situation led to mass protests. In August, at least 20 people were killed and hundreds arrested during protests calling for better opportunities and jobs for Nigeria’s youth.
