The Bayelsa State Government has mourned four indigenes who were among the Nigerian Air Force personnel killed in Monday’s plane crash in Ondo State.
The government observed a minute’s silence for the victims during the 198th meeting of the State Executive Council, presided over by Governor Douye Diri at the Government House in Yenagoa on Wednesday.
The four Bayelsans were identified as Flight Lieutenant Tarila Lazarus from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area; Sergeant Izibenikien Samuel from Yenagoa; Sergeant Ebimobowei Charles Alafuka from Ekeremor; and Godstime Tarabina from Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.
Governor Diri said the incident had deeply affected the state, adding that he had earlier extended his condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the Chief of the Air Staff and the families of the victims before their identities were officially released.
“The state has been deeply affected by this tragedy. We extend our condolences to the families of our four citizens who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident,” Diri said.
The governor noted that flags across Bayelsa were flying at half-mast in line with the President’s directive. He also said the state government would work with relevant authorities to explore ways of supporting the bereaved families.
Diri also commended Bayelsans for their participation in activities marking the state’s 30th anniversary, describing the celebrations as an opportunity to reflect on Bayelsa’s journey and consider its future.
He urged residents to maintain the unity displayed during the anniversary, stressing that political differences should not divide the people.
Ahead of the 2027 political season, the governor called on politicians and their supporters to focus on issues, policies and records rather than insults, character assassination and inflammatory statements.
“Politics will come and go, but we will still remain the same brothers and sisters. Our communities will not be taken away,” he said.
