Lagos Agency Urges Residents to Report Fake, Expired Products via Toll-Free Line

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has urged residents to promptly report fake, expired, adulterated and counterfeit products through its toll-free consumer helpline.

The agency’s General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, Afolabi Solebo, made the call in a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday and signed by the Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Adesile Rufai.

Solebo said residents could report consumer-related violations through the toll-free number 080 0005 2726, describing it as a direct channel for consumers to lodge complaints, seek guidance and obtain assistance from the agency.

He said complaints could also be submitted through the agency’s email and social media platforms on Facebook, Instagram and X, using the handle @lascopa.

The LASCOPA boss urged residents not to rely solely on social media when they encounter consumer-related violations, stressing the importance of formally reporting such cases to the agency.

He said complaints should be supported with verifiable evidence, including receipts, invoices, photographs or videos, product labels, proof of payment and screenshots of transactions, advertisements or conversations with sellers.

According to him, residents can report fake and counterfeit products, expired or adulterated goods, defective products, misleading advertisements and unfair business practices.

Other complaints that can be reported include poor services, online shopping disputes and other suspected violations of consumer rights.

Solebo also advised consumers to verify product details, prices, sellers and terms and conditions before making payments, particularly when shopping online.

He urged residents to examine product labels and confirm the manufacturer’s details, manufacturing and expiry dates, batch numbers, ingredients and usage instructions before purchasing goods.

He said timely and credible complaints would help the agency identify violations and take appropriate enforcement action.

“Consumer protection is a shared responsibility, government, businesses and consumers,” Solebo said.

He urged Lagos residents to remain vigilant and actively participate in efforts to protect consumers and promote a safer marketplace.
