Lagos State Government Begins Payment of Compensation to Affected Victims of Oworonshoki Regeneration Exercise

…… Payment is a fulfillment of promise made – TPL Animashaun GM LASURA

Today Thursday 23rd of October 2025 was a day of joy and relief to some residents of Oworonshoki community in Kosofe local government council area of Lagos State as the state government fulfilled it’s promise of compensation occasioned by the urban renewal and regeneration exercise to deserving receipents.

At a well attended ceremony at the palace of the traditional ruler of Oworonshoki that included the General Manager of Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA) TPL ESV. Olajide Animashaun and his team from his agency, the traditional ruler of Oworonshoki represented by one of his chiefs, residents, affected residents, Community Development Association (CDA) and Community Development Council (CDC) executives and members, security agencies personnel, civil society organizations leaders, members of the media among others, the GM of (LASURA) TPL Olajide Animashaun before handing over the cheques to the individual beneficiaries in the glare of all present, noted that the exercise was a product of several engagements and enumeration carried out by officials of the Lagos State government in conjunction with the relevant stakeholders in the community.

TPL ESV. Animashaun the GM of LASURA noted that Oworonshoki community is a beneficiary of the Lagos State government urban renewal and regeneration exercise as a result of illegal and dilapidated buildings and shanties unfit for human habitation which posed a threat to the environment, life and public safety

He expressed gratitude to God that the promise made by the state government to compensate certified affected residents, is being fulfilled today, even though it was not unlikely that some of the affected residents might have doubted the commitment of the state government to fulfilling it’s promise.

TPL Olajide Animashaun while handing over the cheques to the beneficiaries, was full of praise for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his exemplary leadership in ensuring that the promise made is kept, just as he also commended the honourable commissioner for physical planning and urban development and the Permanent Secretary office of urban development Arc Gbolahan Oki for their tireless efforts in effecting the realization of this day.

It will be recalled that the Lagos State government only recently embarked on the demolition of illegal buildings and structures in Oworonshoki which it certified as illegal, dilapidated and constructed on canals and drainages which posed a threat to the environment and life of the residents in particular and Lagosians in general. The government has also made it known that it had served notices severally to the affected occupants to vacate the structures and shanties to no avail.

Speaking to our corespondent, some of the beneficiaries after receiving their cheques, were full of gratitude to the Lagos State government for fulfilling it’s promise which they believe will go a long way in cushioning their predicament.

In all, about 79 beneficiaries were listed to receive their cheques in batches over two days, with the first batch receiving theirs today, while the second batch will receive theirs tomorrow at same venue.
