NHRC Receives 172 Human Rights Abuse Complaints in Kano

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano State has revealed that it received 172 complaints of alleged human rights violations in September 2025.

The NHRC State Coordinator, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Kano.

According to Abdullahi, out of the total number of complaints, 122 cases have been resolved, while 50 are still pending.

He noted that the majority of the cases — about 130 — involved women and children, reflecting ongoing concerns about domestic abuse, child rights, and family neglect in the state.

“Thirty-two of the cases received during the period were on abandonment of family responsibilities and domestic violence, while 10 cases bordered on economic and cultural rights, labour issues, and physical violence,” Abdullahi said.

He added that the commission also mediated in several marital disputes to restore peace among couples, urging spouses to manage family issues with patience and humility.

“We appeal to couples to be patient and manage their responsibilities with understanding and humility,” he said.

Abdullahi recalled that in March 2024, the commission received 130 complaints of alleged human rights abuses, out of which 111 were treated and 19 remained pending. Most of those cases, he said, also involved violations of women’s and children’s rights, including abandonment of family responsibilities and domestic violence.

The NHRC continues to encourage victims of abuse and other rights violations to report their cases for prompt investigation and resolution.
