The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has stepped down from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet following controversies surrounding his academic qualifications and allegations of certificate forgery.
Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, tendered his resignation in a letter to President Tinubu on Tuesday, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation.
Confirming the development, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said in a statement that President Tinubu had accepted Nnaji’s resignation.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following allegations against him. He resigned today in a letter thanking the President for allowing him to serve Nigeria,” Onanuga stated.
According to him, Nnaji claimed he had become the target of blackmail by political opponents. The President, in turn, appreciated his contributions to the administration and wished him success in his future endeavours.
The minister’s resignation comes amid an ongoing controversy over alleged certificate forgery and doubts surrounding his academic records from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
The dispute escalated when the Federal High Court in Enugu dismissed Nnaji’s attempt to stop UNN from releasing his academic records. The court ruled that the university was within its rights to make the documents public in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request—further intensifying public scrutiny.
Nnaji has continued to deny the allegations, insisting that he is a victim of political blackmail aimed at damaging his reputation.
