CARES Reaffirms Commitment to Ozone Protection in Nigeria

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer: CARES Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Nigeria’s Environmental Protection Efforts

The Center for Advanced Research on Environment and Socio-economics (CARES) joins Nigeria and the global community in marking the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. This day reminds us that the ozone layer is Earth’s shield, protecting all living things from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Thanks to international cooperation under the Montreal Protocol (1987) (ratified by Nigeria in 1988) the ozone layer is on a path to recovery.

Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Environment, NESREA, and the National Ozone Office, has played a strong role in eliminating ozone-depleting substances and promoting eco-friendly technologies. These efforts align with global successes that have already phased out over 99% of harmful chemicals and set the ozone layer on course to return to 1980 levels by mid-century.

CARES’ Contribution:
As part of our mandate to support government and advance environmental knowledge, CARES will, over the next few months, embark on a project to monitor ozone levels and other greenhouse gases in selected Nigerian communities. Our findings will be shared with relevant government agencies to strengthen national data and policy decisions. This is our contribution to Nigeria’s ongoing commitment under the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment (2016), which also addresses climate-warming gases.

Looking Ahead:
The preservation of the ozone layer is proof that united action works. Nigeria’s continued leadership, supported by research and advocacy institutions like CARES, can further strengthen the protection of public health, agriculture, and ecosystems while addressing climate change.

Call-to-Action:
On this occasion, CARES calls on all Nigerians – government, private sector, civil society, and individuals to embrace environmentally friendly practices. Protecting the ozone layer means protecting life, and together we can ensure a safer, healthier future for generations to come.
