Navy Seizes Contraband in Badagry, Hands Over to Agencies
In ongoing efforts to curb smuggling and enhance maritime safety, the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry intensified operations across the Badagry–Seme–Porto Novo waterways and nearby land routes.
Between April 23 and May 14, 2025, the base’s Quick Response Team (QRT) made several significant seizures. These efforts reflect the Navy’s commitment to national security and the protection of Nigeria’s maritime environment.
Seizures Across Several Locations
During operations, the Navy intercepted 97 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50 kg each) on April 26. This occurred within their designated area of operations.
Additionally, they seized 191 wraps of suspected Cannabis Sativa, weighing around 114.6 kilograms. These were confiscated during three raids between April 30 and May 14 in the Packo and Bedrome–Ashipa areas.
In a separate operation, officers also confiscated 307 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), totaling approximately 7,675 litres. These seizures happened at Simtop Jetty, Tosuvi, Ashikpa, and Panshi between April 23 and May 3.
Handover and Disposal in Line with Procedures
Following due process, the Navy handed the rice to the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command. On May 20, they transferred the seized narcotics to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Seme Special Area Command.
The confiscated PMS, however, was destroyed to prevent illegal resale or use.
Navy Reaffirms Commitment to Maritime Security
These actions align with the strategic directive of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla. The directive emphasizes the Navy’s role in promoting security and economic stability.
Moreover, FOB Badagry pledges to maintain its partnership with other agencies and local communities. Through this collaboration, the Navy aims to create a safer maritime environment and eliminate smuggling in the region.
