CSSLN Condemns Uromi Lynching, Demands Justice and Stronger Community Policing

The Conference of State Legislatures of Nigeria (CSSLN) has strongly condemned the brutal lynching of 16 northern travelers in Uromi, Edo State, describing the act as horrific and unjustifiable.

The victims, who were accused of possessing dane guns (local firearms), were attacked and killed by a mob, including members of a local vigilance group, on Friday, March 28, 2025.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the Conference decried the extrajudicial killings as a gross violation of human rights and a threat to national peace and security.

“Such mob actions undermine the rule of law and erode societal values,” the statement read.

While commending the Edo State government and security agencies for their swift intervention, the Conference urged authorities to intensify efforts to bring those responsible to justice.

“We call on the state government to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

The CSSLN also emphasized the need for stricter oversight of community policing structures to prevent abuses by local security operatives.

“It is crucial that these groups operate with professionalism, respect for human rights, and within the framework of the law. Effective oversight will help prevent such incidents and uphold the integrity of community policing initiatives,” the Conference noted.

Expressing solidarity with the victims’ families, the CSSLN extended its deepest condolences.

“Our hearts go out to the families of the deceased. We stand with them in this time of grief and pray for strength and justice,” the statement concluded.
