Fuel scarcity in Niger Republic has started easing following the supply of petrol from Nigeria, leading to a significant reduction in pump prices.
Multiple residents and security sources confirmed that hundreds of fuel tankers have been making their way from Nigeria to the West African nation, helping to alleviate the crisis.
On March 16, 2025, reports emerged that Niger Republic had sought Nigeria’s assistance to mitigate its fuel shortage despite months of diplomatic tensions. A delegation of military junta officials visited Abuja to negotiate with the Federal Government, leading to the approval of 300 fuel trucks for delivery.
The move, according to a government insider, was a strategic diplomatic effort aimed at maintaining engagement with Niger despite political frictions.
Residents of Agadez confirmed that while queues at filling stations persist, the situation has improved significantly. Fuel prices, which had soared to N10,000 per litre, have now dropped to around N5,000 per litre.
A security officer at the Nigeria-Niger border in Illela, speaking anonymously, confirmed the movement of petrol tankers into Niger. However, the Nigeria Customs Service declined to comment, citing the issue as a diplomatic matter.
