The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called for a thorough review of the proposed tax reform bills before the National Assembly, citing concerns over their implications for certain regions and religious communities.
During a public hearing by the Senate Committee on Finance, the NSCIA voiced concerns that aspects of the proposed tax policies could potentially conflict with Islamic financial principles, particularly regarding personal income, inheritance, and business transactions.
The bills have also sparked debate among Northern political leaders, who argue that the reforms disproportionately favor Lagos and other states while neglecting economic realities in the North.
The NSCIA emphasized the need for inclusive and equitable tax policies, urging lawmakers to address concerns raised by various stakeholders before passing the bills into law.
