Nigerian Footballer Abubakar Lawal Dies in Uganda Under Mysterious Circumstances

Kampala, Uganda – Ugandan authorities have launched an investigation into the death of Nigerian professional footballer Abubakar Lawal, who allegedly fell from a shopping mall in the capital, Kampala.

The 29-year-old striker, who played for Vipers Sports Club, reportedly fell from the third-floor balcony at Voicemall Shopping Arcade, where he had gone to visit a Tanzanian friend, identified as Omary Naima. According to police reports, Naima had left Lawal in her room—part of the mall’s complex—preparing tea before the tragic incident occurred. He was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Vipers Sports Club expressed its grief over Lawal’s passing, describing him as a “unique person with a heart of gold.” The club acknowledged his contribution to their league and cup double victory in 2023. His former club in Nigeria, Nasarawa United, also paid tribute, saying, “We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal. May God grant him eternal rest.”

While tributes continue to pour in, local media reports have raised questions regarding the circumstances of Lawal’s death, with conflicting accounts emerging. Some reports initially suggested he had died in a motorcycle accident.

Ugandan police have retrieved CCTV footage and various personal items, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets, and a training kit, as part of their ongoing investigation. Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be provided as inquiries progress.
