The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved a resolution calling for the introduction of paternity leave for fathers in both the public and private sectors of the state.
During the House plenary session held at the State Secretariat, lawmakers endorsed a proposal to grant fathers a 10-working-day paternity leave. This initiative aims to enable fathers to provide necessary support to their partners after childbirth.
Presenting the motion on Thursday, Hon. O. C. Rahman, alongside co-sponsors Rt. Hon. E. A. Ogundoyin, Hon. S. A. Onaolapo, Hon. A. O. Babalola, Hon. R. A. Mabaje, Hon. L. I. Jimoh, Hon. W. A. Akintayo, and Mrs. O. C. Olajide, emphasized the need for family-friendly policies in the state’s public and private sectors.
Hon. Rahman stated that the introduction of paternity leave would allow fathers to support their partners during the postpartum recovery period, thereby promoting gender equality and shared parenting responsibilities.
The lawmakers urged the executive arm of government, through the Ministry of Establishment and Training, to introduce paternity leave within the state’s civil and public service to foster family bonding.
