NNPC, Firm Reduce Gas Flaring by 96% in Two Oil Fields

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited have successfully reduced routine gas flaring by 96% at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields, marking a significant environmental milestone.

In a statement on Thursday, NNPCL highlighted the achievement as a crucial step in curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd. ,Olufemi Soneye, stated that the milestone aligns with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. The success was achieved through an associated gas reinjection strategy at the Madu field, offshore Bayelsa State.

The initiative ensures that gas, which would have otherwise been flared, is now safely stored in an underground reservoir, significantly reducing environmental impact.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mele Kyari, described the achievement as a testament to the company’s commitment to responsible resource management and sustainability.
