Oyo Assembly Moves to Protect Traditional Institutions, Probes Lagelu FM Over Alleged Disrespect to Soun of Ogbomoso

The Oyo State House of Assembly has begun an investigation into Lagelu FM after lawmakers condemned alleged derogatory remarks made by Dr. Doyin Odebowale against the Soun of Ogbomoso on the station’s “Bonsenlo program”.

The Assembly, during its plenary session, classified the comments as defamatory and inciting, emphasizing the need to safeguard traditional institutions in Oyo State. The motion, sponsored by Hon. S.A. Onaolapo (Ogbomoso South) and co-sponsored by other lawmakers, highlighted the historical significance of the Soun’s stool, noting that it was officially recognized as a paramount rulership in 1976. The legislators criticized Lagelu FM and its presenter, Temitayo Oyeladun (Aboo Oro), for airing the remarks without moderation, citing violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

Deputy Speaker, Hon. Fadeyi Abiodun, who presided over the session, classified the motion as a strong resolution and warned against further disrespect to traditional rulers. The House directed its Committee on Information and the Committee on Local Government to investigate the matter, while also summoning Lagelu FM’s management for questioning.

Lawmakers further urged the Executive Arm to seek legal redress and push for sanctions through the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of traditional institutions in Oyo State, warning broadcasters and individuals to guard their utterances against inciting public disorder.
