The Executive Chairman of Onigbogbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Oladotun Olakanle, recently organised the “Ounje Onigbogbo Food Initiative,” aimed at providing support to the residents of the Onigbogbo LCDA.
During his address at the event, Hon. Oladotun Olakanle noted that this was the fifth edition of the initiative. He remarked, “We are doing this to empower our people in these challenging economic times. This situation is not exclusive to Nigeria; it is a global issue. At the grassroots level, we are contributing our efforts to assist both the federal and state governments in ensuring the well-being of our people.”
Hon. Olakanle also highlighted the growing number of beneficiaries, stating, “This time, we have a much larger turnout than in previous editions. Initially, we had planned for 1,500 people, but now we have approximately 2,500 in attendance. I assure you that every individual present will be attended to.”
He further mentioned a quarterly programme tailored to meet the needs of the elderly, ensuring that all senior citizens within the LCDA receive adequate care and support.
In his remarks, the Leader of the House, Hon. Kayode Opayemi, expressed the importance of the initiative, stating, “Today’s event is designed to meet the needs of the good people of Onigbogbo LCDA. It underscores the genuine concern that this administration has for its people. The local government serves as the closest tier of governance to the grassroots, and this initiative reflects the vision of our esteemed leader, Obafemi Awolowo, who recognised the importance of local governance in advancing the interests of the Southwest.”
Hon. Opayemi also called for greater responsibility from local governments, saying, “It is high time for local government administrations to recognise their role in addressing the needs of their communities. It would be beneficial for each local government to develop agricultural systems, which we are currently exploring in our LCDA. A bill concerning this initiative has already reached its second reading.”
In her goodwill message, the LGA Chairman, Hon. Iyabo Akerele, expressed gratitude to God for the success of the event and praised Hon. Oladotun Olakanle for his dedication to the welfare of the people of Onigbogbo.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Salami, took the opportunity to express her appreciation to the council chairman for providing essential food items during these trying times. She offered a heartfelt prayer, wishing that he too would never lack provisions.
